Project Management for Engineers.
Many engineers, well schooled in design and engineering analysis, are unprepared for managing projects and making sure things get done on time, to budget and meeting specifications.
Having been, for a while an associate professor, teaching operations research to graduate engineers in an engineering management course, McCann was asked by a local chapter of the IEEE to prepare and give a short course in project managment to help fill this gap for its members.
Course Content
The course is based on the admirable text, "How to run successful projects" by Fergus O'Connell, Prentice Hall, 1994.
It takes a view of the process of setting goals, chosing teams, defining tasks, scheduling activities, keeping on track and controlling expectations in a step by step definition of a set of simple guidelines.
A component is added to cover critical path concepts for those who missed that too.
In addition, because many of these engineers also lack a background in finance, the key ideas of net present worth of a project (the mathematics is easy for engineers) is covered to show the importance of the time value of money.
Timing
The course is designed to take two half days. It can be given at your location, all in one day if you prefer, or over a weekend. Preferably not more than about 15 or perhaps 20 participants so we can get some interaction going.

Invitation. McCann can help if you have a
design or operational problem that needs some technical support that is outside your
team's experience, some quantitative assessment of what is really the cause of the
difficulties, some design alternatives or just a fresh look by an intelligent
interrogator.
If you have a problem with the behaviour of a market sector, plant, process or item of
equipment and would like to get a quantitative handle on it to improve yield or optimise
performance, then contact us. We are always ready to give a little time
to discuss a new puzzle, in confidence,
of course. We'll only worry about fees
when we have some defined work. We can be flexible
about how we work with you. Top
